Digital Controls' Higher Ed Open Forum Exchange Ideas on Information Security Concerns
DAYTON, OHIO, January 31, 2009 - Although the roads were still treacherous from the a week of the area's heaviest snowfall to date, a devoted group of information security officers from several of the surrounding area's prominent colleges and universities showed up at the Cox Arboretum Mead WestVaco Theatre to launch a Higher Education Information Security Forum.
Growing security concerns and reported breaches in the academic sector prompted Digital Controls Technology Services Group to stage this forum allowing university CIO's and CISO's to focus and share experiences unique to the challenges they face.
As sponsor, the initial Higher Education Information Security Forum was moderated by Mark Metzner, Director of Development Federal Contracts and Facility Security Officer at Digital Controls, helping manage the flow, keeping the discussion moving along, and fostering the collaboration of ideas.
Some of the key topics as suggested prior to the event from Chief Information Security Officers included “Compliancy with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)”, “Security Awareness Training for the Campus Environment”, and “Reporting Risk to the President and Board”.
“We’ve been very fortunate to have been involved with several area universities in the last few years. It made sense, given the current economy, to bring key IT decision-makers together. Maybe some creative, cost efficient ways can be identified to address the prevalent information security issues.” said Vernon Dye, Digital Controls.
